RiverDogs split doubleheader with West Virginia
Mike Jefferson’s sparkling seventh win neutralized a Casey Stevenson-led RiverDogs win in the opener to salvage a South Atlantic League doubleheader split for the West Virginia Power on Thursday at Riley Park.
Jefferson held Charleston to one hit in the 7-1 nightcap after Stevenson drove in four runs in the RiverDogs’ 7-2 first-game victory.
The split gave Charleston a record of 69-63 (30-35 in the second half). West Virginia stands at 57-79 (35-31).
Jefferson (7-7) shut down the RiverDogs’ offense. He allowed only one hit, a homer by Francisco Arcia in the sixth inning, walked two and struck out four. After an error put a man on in the second, he retired the next eight in a row.
Stevenson (2-3, 4 RBIs, 2 runs) and Reymond Nunez (2-3, 2 RBIs) led the RiverDogs in the opener. Stevenson’s bases-clearing, 3-run triple in the sixth was the highlight.
Coming up
The RiverDogs hit the road to Augusta for their final regular season road trip. The first game is scheduled for tonight at 7:05. RHP Cesar Vargas (0-0, 3.86 ERA) will start for Charleston.
