Man convicted in Charleston murder
A Charleston man was convicted of murder Friday and given 40 years in prison as part of a strange case where the shooting victim was dropped off at a fire station by his own father.
Frederick L. Flowers, 18 at the time of the killing last year, of Wimbee Drive was convicted in the shooting death of 25-year-old James Javon Smith, Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said.
Circuit Judge J.C. Nicholson Jr. gave Flowers 40 years on the murder conviction and a concurrent five years for possessing a weapon during a violent crime, Wilson said.
Smith was shot multiple times while he sat in a car on March 1, 2011. He was driven by his father and left at a fire station on Ashley River Road, where he died.
A report at the time said the man left “to clear his head” after driving his wounded son there.
