Scannell wins Freedom of Speech essay contest
Fleet Reserve Association Branch 269 Past President Larry Cox recently presented an FRA Essay Contest National Award to Berkeley Middle College High School rising senior Elizabeth Scannell during the branch’s General Assembly meeting.
The theme was “What Freedom of Speech Means to Me.”
Her essay won first place in the 11th-grade category at Branch 269, first place in the Southeast Region and second place in the national competition.
Cox presented Scannell with a plaque and $1,500 check for winning second place at the national level.
This year’s theme will be “What My Vote Means to Me.”
