HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office is getting an office building with the county’s first morgue.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/QAh9xx ) that will be an improvement for Coroner Ed Allen and his staff who currently work out of a mobile home in Burton that doesn’t even have a conference room.

The county plans to renovate a former county office building in Port Royal. One wing of the building will be used as a morgue.

The coroner’s office handled more than 1,000 deaths last year. The county has arrangements with local hospitals to keep bodies until they can be claimed by family members.

Creating a dedicated coroner’s office was in the county five-year plan approved in 2010.
