One person died and another was injured Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle wreck in McClellanville.

The crash occurred around 5 p.m. on U.S. Highway 17 in the area of St. James Santee Elementary School, sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady said.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee had an issue with its left front tire that caused the vehicle to drive onto the median, Brady said. The Jeep then crossed two lanes of traffic and crashed into trees along with the shoulder of the road, he said.

The Jeep overturned, and one person was thrown from the vehicle, Brady said.

One person died at the scene and another was airlifted to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, Brady said. Neither person appeared to have been wearing a seat belt, he said.

Brady did not identify the injured person, and the coroner’s office has not released the name of the person who died.

The wreck blocked the southbound lanes of Highway 17 for more than two hours.
