A North Charleston man faces a felony DUI charge following a collision with a street sweeper early Thursday that killed his father.

Police charged Deon Bernard Nero, 26, of West Blue Grass Drive, with felony driving under the influence, North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said.

Nero was driving a Chevrolet Blazer that rear-ended a street sweeper about 2 a.m. while headed west on Dorchester Road near the Cedar Grove subdivision, Pryor said.

Three people were riding in the vehicle. Nero’s father, Gleefus Nero, 58, was in the front passenger seat. He died at the scene from massive face and head trauma, said Dorchester County Coroner Christopher Nisbet.

Gleefus Nero was wearing a seat belt, Nisbet said.

Deon Nero and the other passenger had injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Pryor said.

Paramedics treated the back-seat passenger at his home. The man ran there after the accident because he was scared, Nisbet said.

The street sweeper’s driver did not report injuries on the scene, Pryor said.
