Submarine passes through Charleston Harbor and under Ravenel Bridge
The submarine spotted in Charleston Harbor this afternoon was the Navy’s training ship Daniel Webster, returning to its berth at the Charleston-based nuclear instruction program.
The vessel had been in Norfolk, Va., for the past year as part of a $100 million maintenance, a Joint Base Charleston spokesman said.
The Daniel Webster, decommissioned from active military sea duty in 1990, became a dock-side trainer for the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit, part of Joint Base Charleston. Trainees operate there before going to their active assignments.
The work done on the vessel while in maintenance drydock included main engine repair, pump and valve replacements, and a complete exterior paint job, according to published reports.
