Local U14 soccer team finishes fifth nationally
The South Carolina United FC Charleston Battery U14 Pre-Academy boys’ soccer team finished fifth nationally in a recent tournament held in Chicago.
“This year for the first time, U.S. Soccer formed an under-14 academy league,” said coach Matt Parmer of South Carolina United Mount Pleasant.
“We put a team together, a collaborative effort between the club in Mount Pleasant in conjunction with Columbia.”
Players hailed from throughout the state, Parmer said, and played during the season with their normal club teams.
The U14 squad qualified for and won the regionals in Raleigh over Memorial Day weekend, beating teams out of Raleigh, Florida and Charlotte to advance to the 12-team nationals in Chicago.
Parmer said the group worked on fundraising throughout the summer in order to travel to the nationals, where the team won two and lost two, resulting in a fifth-place finish.
“For our state, this is quite an accomplishment,” Parmer said.
“Competing against states with larger player pools and greater resources, our players hung in and competed well.”
