Woman survives leap from bridge
A 33-year old James Island woman was pulled alive from the water Wednesday morning after jumping from the Ravenel Bridge.
Charleston police said they got a call about 4 a.m. that a man saw somebody climbing over a guard rail near the first diamond on the Charleston side. The bridge is not as high there as it closer to the middle.
Police could not find anybody on the bridge or in the water, and none of the cars parked near the bridge seemed relevant, according to the incident report.
Police called the Coast Guard and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office marine unit about 4:30 a.m. to search. They didn’t find anybody, either.
Shortly before 9 a.m., a person walking on the bridge spotted somebody floating in the water and called for help. The Coast Guard returned and pulled the woman from the water between the Charleston peninsula and Drum Island.
The woman is believed to have jumped from the span, but it’s unclear how long she was in the water.
She was taken to the Medical University Hospital, Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said. No more information on her condition was available Wednesday.
