No dice so far for a North Charleston casino boat

Have North Charleston’s plans to attract a casino boat gone bust?

Mayor Keith Summey has talked with two groups interested in operating a gambling boat that would leave from a North Charleston dock and sail into the Atlantic Ocean, where it’s legal to gamble, but neither has been in touch in recent months.

More than a year ago, the city paved the way for such boats by changing its ordinances to allow them.

But not one has arrived so far.

The city likely is seeing little interest because of local factors as well as the national economy, said David G. Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

“It’s been a lot more difficult to attract to capital since the onset of the recession,” he said. “Even in Las Vegas, casino projects have been canceled.”
