A 33-year old James Island woman was found alive in the water between the Charleston Peninsula and Drum Island this morning after jumping from the Ravenel Bridge.

Charleston police said they got a call about 4 a.m. that a man saw somebody climbing over a guard rail near the first diamond on the Charleston side. The bridge is not as high there as it closer to the middle.

Police could not find anybody on the bridge or in the water, and none of the cars parked near the bridge seemed relevant, according to the incident report.

Police called the Coast Guard and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office marine unit about 4:30 a.m. to search the river. They didn’t find anybody, either.

Shortly before 9 a.m., somebody walking on the bridge spotted somebody floating in the water and called 911. The Coast Guard pulled the woman from the water.

She was taken to the Medical University Hospital, Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said.
