GreenJackets one-hit RiverDogs

Edwin Escobar hurled 82/3 innings of one-hit ball to earn the win for the Augusta GreenJackets as they shut out the Charleston RiverDogs, 4-0, in South Atlantic League action on Sunday afternoon at Riley Park in front of a crowd of 4,599.

It was the third straight loss for the RiverDogs (62-60, 23-32).

Escobar (6-7) was simply spectacular, setting down the first nine men in a row before allowing a base hit to right by Eduardo Sosa that just eluded the grasp of outfielder Devin Harris.

The left-hander proceeded to retire the next 17 batters consecutively before walking Sosa and being replaced, having faced only two men over the minimum. Kyle Vazquez came in and got Cito Culver to fly out to end the game. Escobar didn’t need much run support, but his lineup got him the runs he needed.

Myles Schroder gave Augusta (61-23, 29-26) a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI single off starter Philip Wetherell (6-7) to score Brett Krill. Schroder came around to score two innings later on an RBI single by Carlos Willoughby for the game’s second run.

Devin Harris tacked on two more to the GreenJackets’ lead by rocketing a two-run double into the left field corner in the seventh for a 4-0 lead to close out the scoring.

West Virginia is the next stop for the RiverDogs as they begin a seven-game road trip today with the first of four against the Power. RHP Corey Black (1-0, 4.22 ERA) will start the series opener against LHP Mike Jefferson (4-7, 5.20 ERA).

The RiverDogs will return home to open the season’s final home series on Aug. 28, against the Power.
