Allen, bullpen help RiverDogs stifle Jackets

Scottie Allen allowed only one run in five innings to earn his fourth win as the Charleston RiverDogs dispatched Augusta, 3-1, in South Atlantic League baseball in front of 3,888 at Riley Park on Thursday night.

The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the RiverDogs (62-57, 23-29 second half). The GreenJackets (58-63, 26-26) had their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Augusta scored in the first, but that would be the only run Allen (4-7) would allow over five innings.

Ali Castillo tied the score at 1 in the third when he doubled and scored on a Ben Gamel sacrifice fly. The next inning, Castillo broke the tie by lifting a sacrifice fly to left against starter Paul Davis (5-7). Saxon Butler later added a solo homer.

Charleston’s bullpen took over in the sixth and shut down Augusta.
