McIlroy leads by three after third round of PGA

KIAWAH ISLAND -- Former U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy left the Ocean Course Saturday tied with Vijay Singh at 6-under-par for the rain-delayed PGA Championship lead. When he finished the final nine holes of his third round today, McIlroy had opened a sizable three-stroke advantage and was at the top of the leaderboard by himself.

“I think I hit every fairway, only missed a couple of greens, gave myself plenty of looks, plenty of chances for birdies,”McIlroy said after the round.

McIlroy said he would go back to his lodgings and sleep, then get showered and come back for his 1:45 p.m. final-round tee time. The first tee times for the final round were scheduled to begin at 11:44 a.m.

McIlroy bogeyed 13 and then birdied 15 and 16 to cap off a round of 67 and had a 54-hole total of 209. first-round leader Carl Pettersson, who started Sunday at 4-under, finished his final 10 holes in even par with two birdies and two bogeys and was solo second.

Bo Van Pelt, who completed his third round Saturday, was tied for third with Adam Scott, who dropped two shots Sunday morning, and Trevor Immelman, who played even par. Trevor Immelman and Adam Scott for third.

Vijay Singh, who started Sunday tied with McIlroy at 6-under-par, struggled and was tied for sixth at 214. Singh, who had to play 11 holes, had four bogeys, a double bogey and two birdies.

Tiger Woods managed to make up some lost ground. He started the day at 1-under but managed to pick up one shot and tie Singh. Woods started the day with a bogey, managed to get to 3-under and then bogeyed 17.

In addition to Singh and Woods, Peter Hanson and Steve Stricker also were at 2-under.
