KIAWAH ISLAND – The third round of the PGA Championship was suspended at 6:33 p.m. today because of a heavy thunderstorm, with play scheduled to resume Sunday at the Ocean Course.
Rory McIlroy and Vijay Singh are tied for the lead at 6-under-par, with McIlroy through nine holes and Singh through seven. Tiger Woods, who began the day tied for the lead, bogeyed three of four holes to drop to 1-under, tied for 11th.
Play was halted at 4:50 p.m., followed by a heavy downpour and then the decision to suspend the third round. The round will resume at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, with the fourth round set to begin at 11:44 a.m., with players grouped in threesomes. The final group will tee off at 1:45 p.m.
Adam Scott got through nine holes and stands at 5-under, good for third place.
Among players who completed their rounds, Bo Van Pelt, Steve Stricker and Jimmy Walker all carded scores of 5-under 67. David Lynn shot a 68 and Padraig Harrington a 69.
Woods is aiming for his 15th major title; only Jack Nicklaus has won more majors (18).
Singh, 49, seeks to become the oldest player to win a major. Julius Boros at 48 won the 1968 PGA. McIlroy is after his second major title.
Joost Luiten this morning finished his Friday round with a birdie on the 18th hole. Late Friday night, former Clemson golfer Michael Hoey was disqualified. Hoey on Friday didn't report a two-stroke penalty he was assessed for inadvertently failing to re-create a sandy lie on the eighth hole.
