The homeless man suspected of being involved in a Sunday fire at a vacant building has been cleared, authorities said.

The investigation into the cause of the blaze at 4813 Rivers Ave. continues, said Bianca Sancic, spokeswoman for the North Charleston Police Department.

Law enforcement agencies verified that the man identified in reports as an arson suspect was at a hospital when the fire started, Sancic said.

He had no involvement in the cause of the fire, she said.

The man, who lived behind the commercial building, had not been charged, and The Post and Courier did not identify him.

Firefighters responded around 11 a.m. Sunday and found smoke and flames coming from the structure. It took about 50 minutes to control the fire, which did about $20,000 in damage. No one was hurt.
