The Charleston County Public Library offers free programs.

Charleston, Islands
Main Library, 68 Calhoun St., downtown: 805-6930

Met Opera: Lucia Di Lammermoor: Aug. 8 at 1 p.m. Runtime: 2 hours, 25 minutes. Auditorium will open 90 minutes before when seats may be reserved.

Desperate Hours: A Presentation on the Battle of Gettysburg: Aug. 9 at 6 p.m. Presenter Ron Roth is a member of the Speaker’s Bureau of the SC Humanities Council.

Back to School Carnival (all ages): Aug. 23 at 3:30 p.m. Celebrate the start of school with games, prizes and treats. Summer Reading participants can bring their medals or wear their T-shirts for a special prize.

PLAY: Movies at the Beach: “The Adventures of Tintin”: Aug. 3 at 4 p.m. Snacks provided. Rated PG; 106 minutes.

James Island Branch Library, 1248 Camp Road: 795-6679

PLAY with Dad: “Journey 2: Mysterious Island” (ages 11 and younger): Aug. 4 at 10:30 a.m. Rated PG; 94 minutes.

PLAY Day: A Tasty Craft (ages 8 and younger): Aug. 11 at 10:30 a.m. Make a yummy treat.

Word Play (grades 1-5): Wednesdays, Aug. 8, 15, 22 and 29, all day. Challenge yourself to create as many words as you can, using only the letters in a given phrase. Prizes will be awarded.

Invent a Holiday for Aug. (ages 12-17): Aug. 1-31. Teens invent a holiday for the month of August. Place your entries in the Invent a Holiday display. Each week a holiday will be picked and the inventor wins a prize.
