Charleston County Council gave initial approval today to a public indoor smoking ban in the unincorporated parts of the county.

The ordinance must come before council two more times before it receives final approval. If it ultimately passes, it would go into effect Oct. 1.

The measure passed with a 8-1 vote. Councilman Elliott Summey was the sole member to vote against the ban. Council members Henry Darby, Dickie Schweers, Colleen Condon, Herb Sass, Vic Rawl, Anna Johnson, Teddie Pryor and Joe Qualey voted for it.
