Goose Creek team wins Wood Bat World Series title
The Goose Creek Diamondbacks won the Continental Amateur Baseball Association’s 15U Wood Bat World Series played this week throughout the Charleston area.
The team, made up of youth from Berkeley County, won the title with a 7-6 extra-inning victory over the Upstate Mavericks of Greenville.
Goose Creek’s Tyler Gonzales was one of the tournament MVPs, pitching all eight innings in the title match and hitting a two-run double to win the game. Bryce Jonason also was an MVP, going 2-0 on the mound with a 0.00 ERA. Jamison Mobbs batted .611 (11 for 18) and had a 3-run homer.
The Goose Creek team went 5-1 in pool play and then 3-0 in single-elimination bracket play.
Astros acquire ex-Citadel pitcher
Former Citadel pitcher Asher Wojciechowski was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Houston Astros as part of a 10-player deal in Major League Baseball.
Wojciechowski, a first-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2010, was 7-3 with a 3.57 ERA in 18 games at Class A Dunedin this season.
In his last 10 games, he was 6-2 with a 1.84 ERA, with 50 strikeouts and 16 walks in 58 innings.
