St. George policeman arrested in Sumter County
Sumter — A St. George police officer was arrested in Sumter County Friday after reports say he threatened to shoot his estranged wife with his service weapon.
Richard Thomas Newman, 27, of Minus Street, was charged with two counts of criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. Newman is an officer with the St. George Police Department.
Warrants from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office indicate the suspect pointed his gun at the woman who lives in Sumter and told her “I’m going to shoot you” during an argument between the two Tuesday on the 700 block of Ravenel Street.
Authorities said the woman was also threatened previously on July 12 on the 4700 block of East Brewington Road. Reports claim the suspect drew his service weapon while dressed in his police uniform and told her “I’m going to shoot you in the foot.”
Newman turned himself in at the Sumter County Law Enforcement Center and was transported to the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center, where he was booked on both charges.
