Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series: 7 a.m. July 29 at James Island County Park. Now in its 22nd year, this race series consists of five triathlons held throughout the summer. The sprint triathlon features a 0.3-mile swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 5K run. Spectators welcome. To register, contact Paul King at 881-8872, or go to cprc.com/csts.
Charleston Summer Classic Horse Shows: Events throughout the day through July 21 at Mullet Hall Equestrian Center on Johns Island. Folly Pier Fishing Tournament: 6 a.m.-4 p.m. July 21 at Folly Beach Fishing Pier. Tournaments held rain or shine. Prizes for the three largest catches in the Big Fish category and for the largest catch in the King Mackerel category. Online registration ends July 19. On-site registration starts at 6 a.m. Prizes awarded at 4:15 p.m. An adult chaperone is required for participants ages 15 and under. For ages 3 and up. Reggae Concert Series, Mystic Vibrations: 8-11 p.m. July 21 at James Island County Park. Gates open at 8 p.m., music starts at 8:30 p.m. Food, beverage, and souvenirs will be available for purchase. Parks for Tomorrow Public Input Sessions: 7-8:30 p.m. July 24 at Burke High School media center, July 25 at Baptist High School cafeteria on Yonge’s Island, July 26 at St. James-Santee Elementary School cafeteria in McClellanville. These sessions will gather public input on topics including parks, recreation and trails to incorporate into the master plan for the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission. Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center: 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. July 21, 25, 28. A walk through many distinct habitats will allow the group to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies, and other organisms. A chaperone is required for participants ages 15 and under. ACA Kayak Quickstart: 6-8 p.m. July 19 at James Island County Park. This 2-hour, hands-on, informal program, will introduce participants to the skills needed to safely enjoy kayaking. Registration required. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount
Nocturnal Noisemakers : 7:30-9:30 p.m. July 19 at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. Have you ever wondered about noises in the night? Listen for owls, frogs, and others, and shine some gators and spiders along the way. A registered and paid chaperone is required for participants ages 15 and under. Registration required. ACA Essentials of Kayak Touring, Level 2: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 21 at James Island County Park. This course is designed to teach beginners to paddle sea kayaks safely on lakes and other flatwater settings with little wind, waves, or current. Boats, equipment, safety, and basic strokes and rescues will be covered. Registration required. Age: 16 and up. Fee: $60/$50 CCR Discount
Adaptive Paddling Kayak Outing: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 21. Utilizing adapted kayaks, the group will put in at Sunrise Park, then explore the beautiful coastal beach environment of Morris Island. Those who are not experienced adaptive paddler are strongly advised to take an Adaptive Paddling Intro Class prior to this outing. Registration required. Age: 16 and up. Fee: $42/$35 CCR Discount
Canoe and Kayak Sampler: 9 a.m.-noon July 21 at James Island County Park. This hands-on class introduces basic strokes and equipment before giving families a chance to paddle a variety of kayaks and canoes. This program is for children ages 6-15 and their parents. A registered and paid chaperone is required for participants ages 15 and under. Registration required. Age: 6 and up. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount.
Remley’s Point to Shem Creek Sea Kayak Trip: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. July 21. Departing from Remley’s Point, the group will paddle under the Ravenel Bridge and past the USS Yorktown. The group will finish up at Shem Creek. Registration required. Age: 16 and up. Fee: $48/$40 CCR Discount.
Explorers Camp, Our Saltwater Marshes: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. July 23-27 at Wannamaker County Park. Participants will learn more about our Lowcountry marshes. The group will also play field games and attend the water park. Age: 6-9. Fee: $154/$140 CCR Discount
Greenland Kayak Rolling: 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 24-26 at Splash Zone. Paddlers from Greenland learn 30 different capsize recoveries Students should already have some rolling skills. Participants ages 13-15 may register for one of these courses, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Registration required. Age: 13 and up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR Discount
Vamos Cantando: 10-11 a.m. July 25 at Wannamaker County Park Cypress Hall and July 26 at James Island County Park Edisto Hall. Learn to speak Spanish through the power of music. Come sing along to a collection of original and fun songs by Roger Bellow and Berita Martin. Best suited for ages 3-12. Seating begins at 9:30 a.m. and shows start at 10 a.m. Only 300 seats will be sold for each show. Call to make a group reservation for 10 or more. Stand-Up Paddleboard Instructor Certification Workshop: 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. July 28-30 at James Island County Park. This workshop with the certification exam is for the ACA’s L-2 Basic SUP Instructor who teaches students in areas with mild winds and modest tidal currents. God’s Gonna Trouble the Water, Leaving Slavery Behind: Movie at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. July 28.
