The argument that turned deadly at a Waffle House this weekend was started by one man asking another for a cigarette, according to a surviving victim’s statement to investigators.
The details were contained in an arrest warrant issued Monday charging a 19-year-old with attempted murder in connection with a shooting that took place about 4 a.m. Sunday in a Waffle House on Savannah Highway near Main Road.
Deonte Steven Brown, 19, of New Road Extension in Holly-wood is accused of firing the shot that injured 28-year-old Quinton Allen of Johns Island.
Brown turned himself in Monday at the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held in the Cannon Detention Center pending a bond hearing at 2 p.m. today.
Another man, 19-year-old Dontaye Reed of Ravenel, was fatally injured in the incident. No arrests have been made in connection with his death.
Sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Jim Brady said the investigation is ongoing, and he could not yet say how many guns or shooters were involved in the incident.
According to an arrest warrant, Allen said a man came into the restaurant and asked him for a cigarette. When he refused, the man started cursing at him.
Several other males circled around Allen, with one throwing a red cup in his face, the warrant states.
Brown threw a punch at the victim, then later pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired several shots at him, the warrant states.
Employees at the Waffle House on Monday said they could not comment on the incident.
Anyone with information about the shooting should call the Sheriff’s Office at 202-1700 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
