Nine local petition candidates emerge
Several Lowcountry candidates who were booted off the ballot earlier this year have submitted signatures to try to get back on. The deadline was noon Monday for candidates to file their required signatures from registered voters in their district.
State and local election officials now will decide if these candidate’s petitions check out and if they will appear on the Nov. 6 ballot.
Most submitting signatures had filed to run as a Republican or Democrat but got knocked off the ballot in the wake of a S.C. Supreme Court ruling regarding filing ethics forms.
In Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties, the following candidates (and the office they’re seeking) submitted petitions: Wallace Burbage and Walter Hundley (Senate 41); Samuel Rivers Jr. and Mirian Redish (House 15); John Steinberger (House 114); Carol Tempel (House 115); Carolyn Hughes (Charleston County Council District 6); Brian Moody (Charleston County Council District 7); and Miriam Birdsong (Dorchester County Council District 6).
Across South Carolina, 43 petition candidates filed for Legislative seats, according to the State Election Commission.
