HOOVER, Ala. – South Carolina wide receiver Ace Sanders said he and fellow Gamecocks expect running back Marcus Lattimore in the starting lineup for the season opener at Vanderbilt on Aug. 30.

“Oh, yes,” Sanders said Tuesday at SEC Media Days, “and at 100 percent.”

Lattimore missed spring practice recovering from a season-ending knee injury suffered at Mississippi State last October. South Carolina went on to win five of six games without Lattimore.

The junior from Duncan has rushed for 2,015 yards and scored 27 touchdowns in his 20 college games. If healthy, Lattimore is a leading Heisman Trophy candidate.

Head coach Steve Spurrier also said he expects a full Lattimore recovery by kickoff in Nashville, and knows the running game is critical to South Carolina’s penchant for winning close, low-scoring games.

“When your offense can stay on the field,” Spurrier said, “your defense doesn’t have to play so much.”
