Republican Walter Hundley narrowly wins Senate 41 race
Republican Walter Hundley came from behind to defeat Democrat Paul Tinkler in an extremely tight race to fill Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell’s former Senate seat , according to full unofficial results.
Hundley beat Tinkler by only 14 votes out of more than 6,100 cast, Charleston County Election Director Joe Debney said. Green party candidate Sue Edward had 53 votes.
Not only will there be a mandatory recount by Friday, but there are 21 challenged ballots that also could sway the outcome or force a new election.
Voting was light across the board with fewer than 10 percent of the district’s 73,856 voters bothering to go to the polls. Tinkler was leading most of the night until the final precinct from Seabrook Island was added into the total.
The Charleston County Board of Elections will meet Friday to consider the challenged ballots and certify the results. Whoever ultimately wins will serve only until shortly after the Nov. 6 election.
