RiverDogs cruise to 11-5 win over Greenville

Tyson Blaser, Francisco Arcia and Casey Stevenson each drove in three runs and the Charleston RiverDogs cruised to an 11-5 victory over Greenville in South Atlantic League baseball at Riley Park on Sunday with a crowd of 3,208 on hand.

Ben Gamel had four hits for the Southern Division-leading RiverDogs (53-38 overall, 14-10 second half).

Charleston jumped out to a 6-1 lead over Greenville (44-49, 10-13) after two innings, highlighted by Stevenson’s two-run triple in the first and Blaser’s two-run single in the second.

The Drive got to starter Bryan Mitchell in the third to cut the lead to 6-5, but the RiverDogs weren’t fazed.

After Kelvin De Leon’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning, Arcia added an RBI double in the fourth and a two-run homer — his fourth of the year — in the sixth to make it 11-5.

The RiverDogs’ bullpen did the rest. Philip Wetherell (4-2) entered the game in the fifth and hurled two scoreless innings while striking out three. Pedro Guerra kept the Drive off the board by pitching scoreless ball in the seventh and eighth. John Brebbia finished the game with a scoreless ninth.

Ballpark fun

Both teams were sporting throwback Negro League jerseys. The RiverDogs donned Homestead Grays uniforms and Greenville wore Newark Eagles jerseys.

There were also two former Negro League baseball players in the ballpark.

Charleston’s Matt Bashore (1-2, 1.59 ERA) starts today’s 7 p.m. game against Greenville right-hander Luis Diaz (2-5, 6.75 ERA). The Ashley View Pub will be selling beers for $1 on Hair of the Dog Monday.
