Researchers who want to peruse some of Charleston’s oldest maps no longer have to trek to the city’s archives in West Ashley.

Now, they can find hundreds of the more interesting maps and plats online.

Charleston County RMC Charlie Lybrand’s office and volunteer Walt Dunlap helped scan them during the past few years.

Not only are they more accessible — just go to charlestoncounty.org and click on the RMC link — but the scans have helped correct for water stains, mildew and old age that has made the originals hard to read.
