RiverDogs stifle Tourists, 2-1

Brett Gerritse hurled five strong innings and got the win for the Charleston RiverDogs as they outpitched the Asheville Tourists, 2-1, in South Atlantic League baseball Thursday night in front of 4,476 at Riley Park.

The RiverDogs (52-36 overall, 13-8 in second half), who got a solo homer from Ben Gamel in the first and a tiebreaking RBI double by Robert Refsnyder in the fifth, can take three of four if they win today.

The Tourists (58-33, 11-10)took advantage of an error in the first for an unearned run on a sacrifice fly.

Gerritse (2-4) departed after five innings having allowed one unearned run on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Joel De La Cruz threw two innings of hitless ball with three strikeouts. Nick Goody closed out the game with a scoreless and hitless eighth and ninth for his second save of the season.

Ballpark fun

Many fans headed out to Shoeless Joe’s Hill with an ice cold one in hand to take advantage of The Joe being the only place in the Lowcountry to enjoy alcohol in the sand.
