Caramba leads MegaDockBillfishing Tournament with two blue marlin releases

Caramba, owned by Bob Faith and captained by Dale Lackey, is the leader after Thursday’s opening day of fishing in the 10th annual MegaDock Billfishing Tournament being fished out of the Charleston City Marina.

Caramba released two blue marlin (600 points each) and has 1,200 points in the fourth of five events that comprise the 2012 South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series. Caramba was the 2010 series champion.

Second place with 800 points is held by Stream Weaver out of Wrightsville Beach, N.C. Stream Weaver, owned by Rusty Carter and captained by Mike King, released a blue marlin and a sailfish (200 points) and holds second based on time of release.

Micabe, the 2009 MegaDock winner, is third also with 800 points for a blue marlin and a sailfish. Micabe is owned by Mike Larrow and captained by Jay Weaver.

Thirty-five of the 38 boats entered in this year’s tournament elected to use Thursday as one of their two fishing days. The tournament continues through Saturday.

There were 25 billfish releases Thursday, including eight blue marlin, two white marlin and 15 sailfish.

The non-billfish leaders are Dolphin — Lucky Hooker, 45.4 pounds; Wahoo — Reel Patience, 50.8 pounds; and Tuna — Rookie IV, 14.0 pounds.
