West Ashley 12-and-under baseball team captures state title
Entering the state tournament as runners-up to Mount Pleasant in the district tournament, and then losing the first game of the state tourney, the West Ashley 12-and-under All-Stars won five straight games in Aiken to bring home the state championship.
John Knight hit a homerun in Game 2, Vince Bodison hit a grandslam in Game 3, Craig Brown had a total of 6 RBIs in Game 5, and Cole Carroll and Bodison controlled the game on the mound against Mount Pleasant in Game 6.
In the final against Mount Pleasant, trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning, West Ashley rallied, led by an RBI squeeze bunt by Ben Foster, and a game-tying, 2-run double by Bodison. Carroll pitched the final three innings, and John Knight won the game with a walk-off squeeze bunt to score Bodison from third.
West Ashley now heads to Glen Allen, Va., for the Southeast Regional Tournament at the end of the month.
