Three local students were among 24 black male high school students from around the nation who were selected to attend the 2012 Distinguished Young Gentlemen of America Inc. National Summer Academy on the campus of Florida A&M University.

The two-week academy features an accelerated curriculum offering Advanced African Studies & Communal Values; Financial Literacy & Entrepreneurship; Foreign Affairs & Globalization; Leadership & Communication; and Professional & Personal Development.

The local students, all from the Charleston Charter School for Math and Science, are DeShawn A. Anderson, an 11th-grader, and Vernon A. Pryor, a 12th-grader, both of Charleston; and Malik McDonald of Summerville, an 11th-grader.
