HARTSVILLE — A Hartsville man has been charged with illegal conduct toward a child after a 5-year-old girl shot herself to death last month.

Clinton McPhail was arrested Monday afternoon.

Sha’Diamond Graham shot herself to death June 25.

Investigators say several children were playing in a house in Hartsville and found the gun. The gun went off and the girl was hit. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead by Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee.

Sheriff’s Capt. Andy Locklair says McPhail faces up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted. It was unclear if he has a lawyer.
