The Wentworth Mansion in downtown Charleston has received top honors from the world’s No. 1 travel magazine, Travel and Leisure.

Results of the 17th annual World’s Best Awards readers’ survey announced today named the Wentworth as “Top Small City Hotel in the Continental U.S.”

In addition, the mansion ranks No. 12 on the 2012 World’s Best Awards list of Top 100 Hotels overall.

The survey looked at top hotels, cities, islands, cruise lines, airlines and more around the globe.

The Wentworth Mansion is a 21-room hotel. Built in 1886, the site is the former home of a wealthy cotton merchant. Current owners Richard Widman and Linn Lesesne restored the building in 1998, converting it into a luxury hotel that maintains many of the original and distinctive architectural features.
