A slow-pitch softball league for men over 50 is looking for more players. The Low Country Senior Softball Association includes players from Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties, according to league secretary Richard Johnson.

Six teams play Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights at Cook Field at the MeadWestvaco Park at Remount and North Rhett in North Charleston. The league is on summer break now. Games will resume Aug. 20 and continue through October.

Practices continue, even in the off season, at 8:30 a.m. Saturdays at the Parkshore Park field in West Ashley. The practices are open to anybody, Johnson said. The field is at 1 Windsor Drive, which is off Sam Rittenberg Boulevard near the bridge from West Ashley to North Charleston.

Local businesses pay for the jerseys. Some teams have dual sponsors. The teams are sponsored by Honeywell and Flories Screen Printing, Speedie Oil Change, Smokey’s Place, Mount Pleasant Auto, Protronics TV and Meadows Accounting, and Hendrix Honda of Charleston and Drivers Choice Insurance.

Johnson, 66, is retired from the Navy and the U.S. Post Office and plays with the Speedie team. He drives to practices and games from Moncks Corner.

Call Johnson at 312-4222 or email him at rsgreg@homesc.com.
