West Ashley All-Stars on a roll
A collection of young baseball talent in West Ashley proved to be too much for other area all-star talent to handle.
The West Ashley 10-and-under All-Stars had little trouble rolling to the title in the Cal Ripken District Tournament, capping off its run with an 11-1 victory over Mount Pleasant on Thursday.
West Ashley opened the tournament by throwing a no-hitter against Goose Creek and winning 11-0.
Against Goose Creek, Bryce Brown and Stephen Holderness combined to throw nine strikeouts and three walks while allowing no hits in four innings.
Also in that game, West Ashley’s Jett Kirshtein, Jacob Painter and Corey Cochran combined for six hits and five RBIs.
West Ashley then shut out Mount Pleasant 5-0 with Cochran collecting two hits for West Ashley.
Joseph Salvo, Geoffrey Gilbert, Chai Kirshtein and Ryan Adler pitched well for West Ashley, with Gilbert getting the victory.
After beating Mount Pleasant again, West Ashley captured the championship and qualified for the Cal Ripken State Tournament in Aiken on July 5-8. Mount Pleasant qualified for the tournament as well.
The Cal Ripken league is the youth division of the Babe Ruth baseball league.
