COLUMBIA — A man has died after his car collided with a car of a pursuing South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper.

The Richland County sheriff’s department says the chase started on Interstate 20 and ended near the Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

The sheriff’s report says the man had been stopped around 6 p.m. Wednesday for a traffic violation and sped away. Sheriff’s spokesman Curtis Wilson says the man drove into the cemetery and turned around and came back out directly at the pursuing trooper.

The trooper was not seriously injured.

The names of the victim and the trooper have not been released.
