A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday for the first home at the new Forest City Military community at Joint Base Charleston on the air base.

The ceremony marks the beginning of the base receiving 335 new homes from its housing privatization partner, Forest City. It is expected that construction will be complete in late 2013.

In 1996, Congress created the Military Housing Privatization Initiative. The goal is to provide military members with quality homes faster than through military construction.

At Charleston, the effort includes larger homes with two-car garages and at least three bedrooms in every unit. Forest City will also provide all maintenance to the units including landscaping.

Military members pay for the housing through their Basic Allowance for Housing that acts as the rent for each military member.
