Authorities release name of driver killed in Intertstate 26 wreck
A truck went off Interstate 26 this afternoon, struck a tree and burst into flames, killing the driver, authorities said.
Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury identified the driver as Laurence Kelly Engelhardt, Jr., 30, of Goose Creek.
The one-vehicle accident happened about 2:30 p.m. near mile marker 195, just north of Summerville, Cpl. Bob Beres of the S.C. Highway Patrol said.
Beres said a 2005 box truck was traveling east when it ran off the right side of the interstate, struck a tree and caught fire. The wreck is under investigation by the patrol, Beres said.
Engelhardt’s death has been ruled accidental, Salisbury said. No other vehicles were involved. Traffic was affected for several hours.
