MOUNT PLEASANT — Stefan Brewer, who just completed his sophomore season at UNC Wilmington, put together a bogey-free round of 8-under-par 64 Thursday to surge into the lead at the halfway point of the 40th annual Rice Planters Amateur golf tournament at Snee Farm Country Club.

Brewer, who is from Charlotte, is at 11-under 133 after two rounds, one shot in front of Clemson’s Thomas Bradshaw, Georgia’s Michael Cromie and North Carolina’s Patrick Barrett. Bradshaw, who is from Columbia, recorded a second-round 68; Cromie, from Cary, N.C., shot 66; and Barrett, from Pinehurst, N.C., shot 75.

Thirty-three-year-old Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C., the reigning Carolinas Golf Association player of the year and son of two-time Rice Planters winner Bill Harvey, is fifth at 68-67—135.

Defending champion Austin Cody of North Charleston dropped into a three-way tie at 140 that also included Taylor Zoller of North Charleston.

Brewer had matching nines of 32, recording four birdies on the front side and two birdies and an eagle on the back nine.

Bradshaw’s round was more adventurous with seven birdies and three bogeys, two of them coming on the front nine. Barrett, after opening with a 34, birdied five of six holes on the back nine for a closing 31. Cromie also shot 34 on the front while recording three birdies, an eagle-3 and a bogey on the back nine.

The tournament continues through Saturday, with the field being cut to the low 54 and ties after today’s round. Tee times begin at 7 a.m. with the leaders starting at 11:50 a.m.
