Academic Magnet’s Jonathan Glenn is Post and Courier’s boys soccer player of year

Jonathan Glenn’s name is in the record book after scoring 34 goals for the Academic Magnet boys soccer team this season. But his proudest moment was holding up the Class AA state championship trophy.

“I was pretty excited about the record, but I was more excited about winning the state championship,” he said. “Individual accomplishments are nice, but teamwork and team rewards are more important to meet.”

The Raptors won their first state championship this spring with a 5-0 victory over Indian Land to cap a 22-2 season. Glenn, who played a big role in the monumental victory with two goals in a 23-second span, is The Post and Courier’s boys soccer player of the year and heads up the All-Lowcountry team.

“He really stepped up this year,” Academic Magnet coach Jason Hamil said of Glenn, who just completed his junior season. “He scored big goals in big games all year. He scored a pair of goals against both Summerville and Fort Dorchester, who we felt were big early season tests. And, he scored the winning goal against Waccamaw in the regular season. That victory sort of cemented our position as the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.”

Hamil said Glenn always had potential, but showed great improvement during the club season last fall.

“He had a pretty good year as a sophomore, but this definitely was his breakout season,” Hamil said. “I knew coming in that he would be a major factor in our success.”

The state championship ended the Raptors’ stretch of tough luck in the last six years. They lost four times in state championship play, including a 1-0 decision in overtime and 1-0 in penalty kicks.

The Raptors are well represented on the All-Lowcountry team with five selections: Glenn, Davis Michaelsen, Brady Allardice, Wyatt Ball and Mack Koewler.

Hamil is the coach of the year.

Wando, which reached the Class AAAA state championship, has four players on the team: Eric Clark, Trent Rieflin, Hunter Greer and Christian Jablonski.

Bishop England also was well represented as Matthew Demarco, Ross Rogers, Joseph Terry and Brian Byrne made the team.

Rounding out the team are Joe Amon, Summerville; Wesley Eads, Fort Dorchester; George Grice, Porter-Gaud; Kyle Egbert, Ashley Ridge; and Devin L’Amoreaux. Fort Dorchester.
