Mamma Brown's BBQ comes back after nearly two years

Mamma Brown's BBQ, a Lowcountry staple of slow-roasted, pit-cooked barbecue for 14 years before closing in 2010 when its lease wasn't renewed, is back.

It's still in Mount Pleasant, just a bit farther up the road than its former Ben Sawyer Boulevard site. The new location is 2840 Highway 17, in a former KFC building near S.C. Highway 41.

It offers the same items as before in either eat-in, carry-out or catering.

Mary Alice Brown has reopened the business with other partners. It's open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Going dark
Engelberg's Furniture, started in the mid-1930s in Ridgeville before moving in 1985 to Summerville, will close by June 30 or before, depending on stock. A second store with the company, Sofas Plus, closed late last month.

The family-owned furniture store at 901 N. Main St. in Summerville is having a going-out-of-business sale with some items 75 percent off.

The owners plan to convert the site into an antique mall that will open about three weeks after the furniture business closes, said co-owner Julie Moore. The new antique mall will be called Summerville Antique Gallery.

Also, the Lowcountry is losing one of its three Fred's Super Dollar stores. The shop at 205 N. Goose Creek Blvd. in Goose Creek is in the process of closing, with items marked down 20 to 60 percent. No closing date has been set. The sale will continue until all stock is sold.

Also closing is Salt and Seaweed, at 155 Market St. in downtown Charleston. Open 18 months, the swimwear and apparel shop won't go away completely. It's moving online. Its last storefront day is July 13, and some items are marked down 80 percent, owner Jesse Nersesian said.

A final closing note: Alchemy Coffee at 11 Magnolia Road in West Ashley served its last cup last week after four years in business.

Rearrangement
Dwelling Inc., a home-furnishing store that's been at 474 King St. for about a decade, is moving south to a 1,430-square-foot shop at 165 King St.

Third Thursday
Downtown Summerville's Third Thursday event this month will feature live performances on Hutchinson Square from the Summerville's Got Talent Showcase as well as the Tip Tap Toe Dance Studio. The art walk and classical guitar music will fill Short Central Avenue. Shops and restaurants are open late, from 5-8 p.m., with special deals and special meals.
