South Carolina’s College World Series game against Kent State rained out until noon Thursday

OMAHA, Neb. – South Carolina’s College World Series elimination game tonight against Kent State has been postponed by rain until Thursday at noon Eastern on ESPN2. The winner of the game will play Arkansas on Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern as scheduled, on ESPN2.

USC coach Ray Tanner planned to start freshman left-hander Jordan Montgomery against Kent State on Wednesday night, but the postponement meant he could start senior ace lefty Michael Roth. And that’s what Tanner decided to do, after talking with pitching coach Jerry Meyers. Montgomery will start against Arkansas if USC beats Kent State.

Tanner had originally decided to start Montgomery over Roth for the Kent State game tonight. Roth would have been throwing on three days of rest.

Roth started USC’s World Series-opening win over Florida on Saturday. If USC beat Kent State with Montgomery, Tanner planned to start Roth against Arkansas on Thursday, provided Roth didn’t make a relief appearance against Kent State, and he was going to be available to do that.

Tanner said immediately after the game was postponed that he hadn’t made a decision about his starter for the Kent State game. He planned to return to the team hotel and discuss the situation with Meyers. USC announced Roth as the starter at 10:30 p.m. Eastern.

The Golden Flashes on Thursday will start righty Tyler Skulina, who was scheduled to start against USC today.
