Manatee seen in Shem Creek

MOUNT PLEASANT — Three manatee have been spotted by onlookers this afternoon moving up Shem Creek in the boat-busy commercial district.

The beloved, slow-moving mammals are vulnerable to boat strikes. S.C. Department of Natural Resources officers responded to a call, but didn’t sight them, said Lt. Robert McCullough.

“But it is that time of year,” he said, urging boater caution.
