Cable maker Nexans breaking ground on $85 million Berkeley County plant today

High-voltage cable maker Nexans is breaking ground today on a $85 million manufacturing plant it is building in Berkeley County.

The French-owned company announced plans in March it will create up to 200 jobs in the Bushy Park Industrial Complex near Goose Creek.

Nexans expects to begin operations in 2014. The South Carolina plant will focus at first on making underground cables that can handle 69 to 420 kilovolts.

Gov. Nikki Haley is scheduled to attend today’s ground-breaking ceremony, as are Stephen Hall, president of Nexans Americas, and Frédéric Michelland, executive vice president for Nexans Group.

Nexans was founded in 2000 as part of the French telecommunications giant Alcatel, which spun off the business a year later.

Nexans makes copper and optical fiber products for an array of commercial customers. It has 24,500 employees at operations around the globe, including two business units in North Carolina.
