This image from a dashcam video of the chase, shows the SUV on its side after it collided with another vehicle.

The man who was driving a sport utility vehicle that crashed during a chase by a sheriff’s deputy Saturday was identified as 33-year-old Eddie Raynard Clayton of North Charleston, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Clayton was driving a 2004 Mercury SUV that fled from a Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Interstate 526 and eventually ran a stoplight on Dorchester Road.

The Mercury broadsided a 2012 Dodge van driven by Freddie Doe, 60, of Summerville, according to troopers. The SUV then caught fire.

Clayton suffered serious injuries, and Doe’s injuries were not life-threatening, according to the Highway Patrol. They both were wearing seat belts and were taken to Medical University Hospital.

Clayton was arrested, but his charges were not immediately known, according to an online jail database.

Clayton has past arrests on charges of driving under suspension, criminal domestic violence, resisting arrest and failure to stop for blue lights, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.
