Swinney contract extension talks progress, though deal not finalized according to agent
CLEMSON - Football coach Dabo Swinney is nearing a contract extension with Clemson, though no details have been finalized, Swinney’s agent Mike Brown told the Post and Courier on Friday.
ESPN reported Friday that Swinney was “close” to reaching an agreement on a new six-year contract but Brown stated “noting has been finalized” and noted the report was premature.
The two sides have been working toward a contract extension for several months.
Swinney has three years remaining on his contract.
In addition to years it’s unclear how many, if any, dollars would be addeded to Swinney’s contract.
Swinney accepted a lower salary for 2012 ($1.9 million) than his contract called for to allow Clemson to spend a program record amount on assistant contracts,
Both Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris, six years, and defensive coordinator Brent Venables, five years, have more years remaining on their contracts than Swinney.
The Clemson board discussed Swinney’s contract during its board meeting on Thursday in Columbia.
“We’re having serious discussions,” board chairman David Wilkins said. “We’re very close to coming to an agreement.”
Swinney is 29-19 overall and 19-10 in the ACC. He led Clemson to its first ACC title since 1991 last season.
