Storm could dampen Memorial Day weekend plans
A big old mess of wet weather is expected in the Lowcountry just in time for the Memorial Day weekend.
A disorganized weather system off the coast could become a tropical storm later today or early Saturday. While the Charleston area will likely be spared a direct hit - most models show it striking southeast Georgia or northern Florida — the storm could well drop a good bit of rain on the Lowcountry, meteorologist Jonathan Lamb of the National Weather Service said.
The current forecast calls for the heaviest rainfall to hit late Saturday and continue into Sunday, with a 50 to 60 percent chance of rain on Sunday, Lamb said. Memorial Day looks to be a bit drier at this point, with a 30 percent chance of rain, he said.
Forecasters should know more as the storm becomes better organized. But locals should be ready to break out the umbrellas for their weekend cookouts, which might be a bit breezy as well.
Surfers could see some decent waves as the storm approaches, though they should watch out for possible rip currents.
