Sewee Wildlife programs

These programs require participants to register in advance by calling the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center at 843-928-3368.

Wheelin’ Sportsmen Fishing Roundup: 8 a.m.-noon June 2 at Nebo ponds. Mobility-impaired men, women and children of all ages can fish with the help of volunteers in a safe environment. Sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation.

GET OUTDOORS DAY: June 9. The daily parking fee at the Buckhall Recreation Site on the Francis Marion National Forest will be waived. Walk the dock and stroll the nature trail through the pine woods and maritime forest, keeping an eye out for the painted bunting or kingfisher.

Youth Fishing Rodeo: 7:30-11 a.m. June 9. Children ages 6-16 can drop their line and create a Fish Art T-shirt. Bait, prizes, food and some assistance are provided. Weigh-in at noon. There must be one adult for every two children. The event is limited to 85 youths. Only children will fish, although adults can help bait the hook, cast the line and net the catch.

Cape Romain Lighthouses Tour: 9 a.m., June 10. The morning will start with a slide presentation on the history of the two lighthouses. Then participants will drive to the McClellanville boat landing and board the Coastal Expeditions Island Cat Ferry at 10:30 am. to travel to the island. The tour costs $45.

FATHER’S DAY FISHING: 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. June 16 at Sewee Pond. Fish and enjoy the sights of an occasional green heron, American alligator or yellow-bellied slider.

EXPLORER SERIES: 10 a.m.-noon June 16. Children ages 6-10 will learn about the life cycle of butterflies, create and color their butterfly, sniff out a flower to pollinate and observe pollinators in the field.

WEBELOS BADGES: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. June 23. Forestry and Nature Webelos Activity Badges.

BOY SCOUT BADGES: 10 a.m.-noon June 30. Fish & Wildlife Management Boy Scout Merit Badge program. Scouts will learn about the science and art of managing wildlife, both animals and fish. The program costs $5.
