Charlie Brown not only starred as a football player on the high school, college and professional level, he’s also coached at all three levels.

He knows what good instruction can mean on the field and also in the classroom and he wants to share that with Lowcountry youngsters. Brown will hold two free football camps next month — June 4-5 at Burke High School and June 7-8 at St. John’s High School.

The camps are open to youths ages 8 to rising high school seniors. Register by calling (803) 479-3635 or email gotodowntown@yahoo.com.

Brown is a Johns Island native and two-time All-Pro wide receiver for the Washington Redskins.

The camps are sponsored through the Brown-McCrone Foundation, A Lifetime of Giving Back. Brown will be joined by local coaches and former and current NFL players. There also will be motivational speakers who will stress the importance of education.

“I want to give back,” said Brown, who now makes his home in Florence. “I’m trying to target underprivileged kids who can’t afford to go to some of these college camps. They will get the same type of teaching.”

Brown said he hopes to spread the camps to more communities next year and would like to include camps in the Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania areas.

After attending St. John’s High School, Brown starred at South Carolina State and then played with the Redskins and Atlanta Falcons.

Brown has taught and coached at schools in South Carolina and Georgia and coached football at the high school, college and professional levels.
