South Carolina’s jobless rate falls again, to 8.8 percent
South Carolina’s jobless rate edged down to 8.8 percent in April, the ninth straight monthly decline, new figures released this morning show.
The March rate was 8.9 percent.
Nationally, the unemployment rate dropped from 8.2 percent in March to 8.1 percent in April.
“In the last year, approximately 28,290 people found work in South Carolina, signaling ongoing improvement,” said a statement from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.
Leisure and hospitality jobs led the gains. The number of government jobs continued to decline.
In Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties, there were 12,606 advertised jobs openings in April, according to DEW. That’s the most of any “workforce area” tracked by the department.
Healthcare and technical jobs accounted for the most ads.
